INTERNATIONAL ELEPHANT FOUNDATION
The International Elephant Foundation (IEF) is a non-profit organization founded in 1998 for the purpose of promoting in situ and ex situ conservation, education, and research of the world’s Asian and African elephant populations, including habitat and species protection, scientific investigation, information sharing and exchange, and improvements in captive elephant husbandry.
IEF’s Mission:
To support and operate elephant conservation and education programs, both in managed in managed facilities and in the wild, with an emphasis on management, protection, and scientific research. |
IEF operates under the direction of a Board of Directors comprised of elephant professionals with well-recognized expertise in the management, husbandry and care of captive elephants as well as broad experience with in situ elephant conservation.
IEF’s work is made possible by the generous support of its Board, conservation grants, solicited and unsolicited donations from other foundations and organizations, and public donations. Funds are used to support:
- Research projects on a range of subjects from DNA analysis of ivory samples to studies to detect migration patterns, and habitat use;
- Projects to reduce human/elephant conflicts;
- Community-based elephant conservation;
- Scientific studies of elephant diseases, reproduction and physiology;
- Training workshops to exchange information between elephant caretakers and wildlife scientists in range states and their western counterparts;
- Scholarships to ultrasound and elephant management schools;
- The annual research symposia;
- Relevant elephant publications and training materials;
- Equipment, supplies and training to assist with anti-poaching efforts in Africa and Asia
